Today has been a little overwhelming.
Actually, this entire weekend has been overwhelming.
Turning 20 proved to be rather exhausting and much more emotional than I had expected. (I had two ugly-cry breakdowns yesterday and barely escaped one today. For absolutely no reason, might I add.)
But today I am overwhelmed because I’m not totally sure how to handle myself. Today is the first Valentine’s Day I’ve celebrated as a single lady since I was 14 and let me just tell you, it was weird.
I was overwhelmed by not giving and receiving gifts.
I was overwhelmed by not getting dressed up-I didn’t even put on makeup today-to go to some special dinner.
I was overwhelmed at the amount of sugar I ingested and number of movies I watched with friends in place of said dinner.
I was overwhelmed with sadness because I feel that I still don’t know how to handle a single life.
I promise I’m not writing myself a pity party, but seriously-I was just thoroughly overwhelmed.
But more than that sadness or anything else, I was overwhelmed with God’s love for me.
My best friend Laura sent me a link to a video after I shared one of my hundred sob stories of the weekend.
The video, a man standing in an empty auditorium, begins with the words, “You are beautiful.”
Instant tears. If you know me, this isn’t a shocking fact, but, wow, this video was powerful!
Hearing a guy say the simplest words meant so much, even if he was a stranger. The video continues calling me (us) smart, kind, funny, unique and so on. Worthy of love and affection, never too much (debatable in my case), and always enough.
Precious. A diamond. A rose. A pearl. The most stunning of all God’s creation.
I’ll repeat that in case you didn’t believe it:
The most stunning of ALL God’s creation.
Each and every one of us. Every woman, every person, is cherished and adored by the One, True God. We are precious and made worthy through Him.
No lack of earthly love or affection changes this beautiful truth. Whether we’re freshly single, have never had a boyfriend, are in a relationship or have been married for years, we are beautiful to the Father.
He created us in His divine image and molded us perfectly according to His specific, detailed plan for each of our lives. He gives us the love we were designed to crave. He stills the waters of the raging storms within our hearts. He gives us peace when our souls are overwhelmed.
Because to Him, we are worthy. Through Him we are worthy.
If this Valentine’s Day has been especially overwhelming for you, delight in this glorious truth that who you are is perfect, because God makes no mistake. He knows every beautiful (and slightly less so) detail of your life and loves you regardless.
